Resolve Issues with Sales Techniques - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career We have all encountered awkward moments whether with a significant other, client or prospective hiring manager. Whether you feel betrayed, angry or just uncomfortable, it is of less importance than the manner in which you respond. Sales techniques lead the way out of potentially damaging your outcome. Using the following steps in order may serve to assist the next time help is desired. The first sentence should begin with the word, “Why?” Dependent upon the situation and the other person’s style, follow up with “…do you believe, feel, think…” Then fill in with your own vocabulary. Your question will be best answered if you allow the other party to get everything on their mind out into the open. This process is best for you, too. This is the only way you will uncover where the miscommunication occurred. Be careful not to interrupt but allow the monologue to run its course. Salespeople also listen for what is not being said. You may wish to question the noticeable omissions. Generally speaking, clarification is usually required in misunderstandings. Be certain to get full meaning of everything being said. Let the other person completely finish their side of the story before you begin to tell your story. Should there be a number of points to the misunderstanding or difficulties encountered, as you see it, take notes to refer to as you defend or make a case for your position. Diplomatically respond to each point mentioned with an explanation. As you do respond, be of the mindset to find a compromise or agreement. Before moving to the next point, make certain the first agreement is in place. At the end, in your own words and with a kind voice, ask, Does this clear everything up and may we proceed? Most of the time, these steps will produce a positive outcome. However, our theme is to attract the right job or clientele. Should you find someone unreasonable and unwilling to compromise or work through the matter, it will be in your best interest to walk away. There is nothing worse than trying to work with someone who does not appreciate your efforts. One of my favorite quotes is that of Abraham Lincoln who said, You cannot please all of the people all of the time. Should you need to walk away, do so knowing that you tried your best. When you take the time to clarify miscommunication, it serves to build your personal brand. By being willing to have an open discussion, you distinguish yourself from many. Your integrity stands out. When applying for a job, hiring managers are pleased to see this quality. You will be more likely to be offered the job. As an entrepreneur, by steadfastly building your reputation, good word of mouth will precede you helping you to develop further business. Current clients will be far more likely to provide repeat business, referrals and testimonials. This is the path for developing a thriving business. The International Crisis of Lance Armstrongs Brand - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career In my post last week I shared 4 personal brand attributes that transcend cultures with examples of globally famous people who in my opinion epitomize these attributes. This week I want to focus on one personal brand in particular, Lance Armstrong, and why I feel his recent confession to years of lying actually did far more damage to his personal brand than good. Lances confession  should have been THE critical first step in his personal brand redemption. However, the vagueness of his words in some cases, and the downright arrogance in others lead to 4 personal branding mistakes.  Sure Lances legal team likely coached him on what to say, how to say it, and where to be vague. Lance will have legal trouble no matter what he says.  Yet, if he truly wanted to pedal out of the starting gate and begin Stage 1 of the most important Tour of his life, then he should have avoided these 4 personal branding FAILS. FAIL #1: Lack of Sincerity I didnt fail a test. Retroactively, I failed those.  The  definition of cheat is to gain an advantage on a rival or foe that they dont have. I didnt view it that way. Lance has proven that he is a master of semantics, and this interview was no different. His monotone voice and choice of words continued to damage his credibility. Lances language was more of someone expressing arrogance and blame, and less of someone taking genuine and sincere ownership.  Yes, he verbally admitted he took performance enhancement drugs. He is owning up to that, but to not be fully transparent and say I cheated does not convey the sincerity we expected. FAIL #2:  Selfish Intentions If youre asking me if I want to compete again, the answer is hell yes, Im a competitor.   This to me was an eye-opening statement.  As an athlete it is a given that Lance desires to compete again, but why emphasize it in this forum? This single comment was a personal branding killer. People go on Oprah to seek forgiveness, to offer their mea culpa, to pull back the curtain.  This comment confirmed a selfish intention to cut a deal and compete again. FAIL #3:  Woe is Me Attitude I dont like thinking about it but it was a $75 million day.   Lance had a great opportunity to  acknowledge that his actions justified the loss of his sponsorships.  However, he decided to focus more on how he lost his future income as if this would be a reason for the world to feel bad for him. I think it is fair to say that nobody anywhere is feeling pity for him. FAIL #4: No Foundation of Integrity Everybody that gets caught is bummed out they got caught. This story was so perfect for so long. Would Lance have ever admitted to all of this if the evidence hadnt been strong enough to strip him of his titles and ban him for life? After seeing this interview, it is clearer to me and millions of others around the world that he likely never would have. And Body Language Counts Too! In addition to these verbal faux pas, Lance also managed to further damage his image simply with his body language. People who are being transparent use open body language, steady eye contact, a relaxed posture, and a lean forward as if reaching out to others. Lance demonstrated non-verbal communication that was quite the opposite to these actions throughout most of the interview. Many critics feel that his body language demonstrated that he continued to lie. On the Job by Anita Bruzzese Why Teams Don't Trust One Another -- and How to Fix It Trust is the glue of life.Its the most essential ingredient in effective communication. Its the foundational principle that holds all relationships.Stephen Covey In an election year, the issue of trust is front and center as candidates at the local, state and national level argue who is the most trustworthy. Trust also is becoming a bigger deal in companies, especially ascross-functional teamsstrive to develop a cohesive strategy to drive innovation. Unfortunately, leaders are discovering that no matter how talented a team may be, innovative ideas may flounder and productivity may drop ifteam members lack trust in one another. This lack of trust can be the result of several different factors. For example, science shows that human beings often make snap judgments about people they meet for the first time, butresearchshows that our own intuition can be wrong when judging those we dont know well. First impressions are not always the best way to judge a person and can prove to be inaccurate, experts say. Further, some employees may have had poor experiences working on cross-functional teams in the past, further eroding their willingness to trust such teams again. Additional obstacles to establishing trust include old-fashioned turf battles, poor communications and anunwillingness to changehow work gets done. This all points to the fact that is can be very challenging for leaders toinstill trustamong cross-functional team members. A recentstudyfound that nearly 75% of cross-functional teams are dysfunctional. The reason why most cross-functional teams fail is because silos tend to perpetuate themselves: for example, engineers dont work well with designers, and so on, saysBehnam Tabriziof Stanford Universitys Department of Management Science and Engineering. Still, even teams who are familiar with one another can have trust issues, which is why establishing trust is the No. 1 challenge for leaders, says Thomas Barta, a former McKinsey partner and leadership expert. He explains that managers must serve as integrators for teams, helping members better communicate andunderstand one another. Think about how trust is established its always about your credibility and knowledge, Barta says. Most leaders are good at putting that on the table, but then they need to look at the second component of trust: intimacy. Barta explains that when employees from different functions get together, it can lead to some strong differences of opinion and leaders need to help workers get past those defensive positions and instead learn about one another. Trust and intimacy come about by building a relationship with someone finding out who they are and what theyre about, he says. Creating a joint vision At Halogen Software, at least a handful of cross-functional working groups are in play at one time, created and disbanded as needed, says Dominique Jones, chief people officer. I think one of the lessons we learned is that in the first meeting everyone wants to jump in and fix whatever it is in five minutes. But its best if they take an hour or so just to understand one another to know the background of those in the room, she says. Do you want to lose weight or become a better person? Maybe you want to focus on your career and leave an unsatisfying role.Actually, do you have any idea of your dream role? Many people don’t actually know what their dream job or position is until they are actually in it and working in the role everyday.Maybe 2017 is the time you should try something different, you never know, by this time next year you may just be in your dream role and looking forward to an even happier 2018.evalConsidering and launching yourself into a different career role might be difficult, but there’s absolutely no time like the present. If you want to take the plunge, you need to do it and you might not even need or want to wait until the turn of the year.What could you even do, though? If a role isn’t satisfying, you need to look forward to new, and different opportunities that will give you a new lease on life.Don’t lie to yourse lf and lead a unsatisfying life, fight for the opportunities and enjoyment that you deserve and don’t be afraid to try something new.
